thomas newson

At the ripe young age of 22, Thomas Newson has accomplished more than some DJs ever achieve in their entire lifetimes. Rising to the top of the music charts, one of his first singles, “Pallaroid,” reached #1 on Beatport’s progressive house chart, and #3 on Beatport’s main list. Following that release was one of the most recognizable big room house songs of the last few years, “Flute,” collaboration with New World Sound. All of this attention caught the eye of none other than Hardwell, and ever since signing to the label, Thomas Newson has been a regular part of major labels such as Protocol, Revealed, Spinnin’, and Armada.

What inspired you to make one of your latest tracks, “Tonight?”

Swedish House Mafia was always my big inspiration to me, especially their melodic stuff. That’s what inspired me to make a track like that!

How do you enjoy being on the Revealed Recordings imprint?

Revealed is one big family! We always have fun with each other and we even have a Whatsapp group chat solely for talking about nonsense. Hardwell is in that chat as well!

For those who may not be familiar: what is the general theme of your radio show, Federation Radio? Any special surprises for the show coming up?

I actually recently changed my management, so the last Federation Radio show was a few months ago, but I’m working to get a regular show back on track. The new show’s concept is that it begins with a 15-minute warm up of music I like to listen to, but can’t really play in my sets, followed by a weekly guest mix featuring new talent to be showcased in my show, and ending with a top 3 countdown, as well as some new tracks I like to play.

Do you have any plans for Miami Music Week this year?

We’re working on playing some label nights. As far as the rest of it goes, I’d also like to just enjoy WMC and catch up with all the DJs and people in the industry.

Can you tell us about what you’ve been working on lately?

I haven’t had much time in the studio lately, actually. I just finished a tour about three weeks ago and now I finally have some time to work on new stuff. I’m currently working on a remix for Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, some radio friendly stuff. I’m also experimenting on a 150 BPM track just for fun! Maybe I’ll do something with it but let’s finish it first haha.

What does your 2017 tour schedule look like? Can you tell us about any tours/festival appearances?

I’ll be at some Dutch festivals with one of the most iconic pop festivals of the Netherlands: Zwarte Cross. I’m working on getting a lot of shows booked, including a few in Asia! The thing is that the scene has changed a bit. Of course, all the big guys have a full schedule already but for guys like me there is a lot being booked last minute, like 1 month or 3 weeks before the show!

Are you close with Hardwell, and if so can you tell us your favorite thing about him?

He’s the nicest person in the industry and is always friendly to everyone. One time I had a show somewhere and he happened to have a weekend off back at home. Some friends of mine happened to be going out in Breda (his hometown) and he ended saying “Hi” to them and had a drink with them and had fun. I don’t think there’s any other DJ that will do that!
